A quick guide to modern cloth nappies:

All-in-one Nappy

Ideal for quick changes

A shaped cloth nappy with waterproof cover built in

The most expensive style of nappy but will still save you money.

Two-part System

These nappies have the cloth nappy plus a separate waterproof cover

Can be sized or birth-to-potty

Birth-to-potty

Should last from birth through to potty training no need to buy another nappy!

Could be either an all-in-one nappy or part of a two-part system

Pocket Nappy

Effectively a nappy with a pouch used to hold a prefolded pad/insert

Can vary degree of ‘boosting’ for different children/times of day

Prefolds

A folded cotton pad used in conjunction with a waterproof cover

Slim fitting but no elastic on nappy so must have securely fitting waterproof cover

Terry Nappy

A terry (towelling) square requiring simple folding

Requires a separate waterproof cover (wrap)

Once folded, terry is safely secured with a nappy nippa

Easy drying of both cover and terry

Can fit from birth to until potty training by varying fit

Very cheap system but can take time to get used to

Waterproof Cover

Covers nappy to keep babies clothes dry

Available in a variety of sizes

Also sometimes called a 'wrap'

Liners

Available in two main types - paper and washable

Used inside nappy

Allows wee to soak through but not pass back to baby’s skin

Allows easy removal/flushing of poo from soiled nappies

Booster Pads

A shaped cloth pad used with nappy to add extra absorbancy

Ideal for temporary boosts such as night-time, car journeys and at times when wetting increases
